Cleaning Services Team Member

The Department of Employment and Labour sets the national minimum wage at R30.50 per hour for all workers including cleaning staff from 1 March 2026. Overtime must be paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate after 45 hours per week. Employers in the contract cleaning sector must display this rate on payslips.

Cleaning staff may not work more than 45 hours per week or 9 hours per day under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. Workers receive 21 consecutive days of paid annual leave after 12 months of employment. Sick leave is 36 days over a 3-year cycle.

No formal education or prior experience is required by the Department of Employment and Labour for entry-level cleaning positions. Employers may request a Grade 9 certificate or basic literacy for safety compliance. A valid South African ID or work permit is mandatory for all applicants.

Applicants must submit a valid South African ID, proof of address, bank account details, and a completed Z83 form when applying via labour centres. A CV and contactable references are also required for shortlisting. Foreign nationals need a valid work visa endorsed for domestic or cleaning work.
