Sandmeyer Steel Company maintains the largest single-site inventory of stainless steel, nickel alloy, and titanium plate in North America. We stock more grades than our competition, with over 15 million pounds (7,500 tons) in 38 different grades.

POSITION TITLE: Shipper/Packer

DEPARTMENT: Shipping

SHIFT: Day Shift (M-Th 7:00 am - 3:30 pm; F 7:00 am - 3:00 pm)

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Supervisor – Shipping

PAY LEVEL: Primary Support

FUNCTION: Check material received from all departments and external subcontract processors to ensure that product shipped meets external customer requirements. Prepare orders for shipment to external customers. Ship orders.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Follow all safety rules and keep work area in orderly condition.

2. Check dimensions and/or squareness of finished pieces by using a micrometer, scales, and/or measuring tape.

3. Check surface condition, flatness, quantity, and general quality of finished pieces. Arrange for flattening or flatten pieces, if necessary.

4. Clean pieces and mark material with identification and other markings using die stamping equipment, inkjet printer, or markers.

5. Build, pack, and secure boxes, crates, and skids for shipping.

6. Assist in loading Company trucks and common carrier trucks using forklifts or overhead cranes.

7. Perform additional responsibilities as requested or as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. High school diploma or equivalent experience required.

2. One year of related experience preferred.

3. Willing and able to work day shift with occasional scheduled overtime.

4. Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision.

5. Physical activity requires continuous standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting, and carrying and lifting of pieces of steel that at times weigh up to 75 pounds.

6. Basic/linear measurement skills such as ability to read micrometer and measuring tape are required.

7. Basic math skills necessary to perform fraction-decimal equivalent conversions are required.

8. Basic verbal skills necessary to read, understand, and mark steel and shop orders are required. Experience operating and maintaining inkjet printer helpful.

9. Neat and legible handwriting required.

10. Experience with operating forklift trucks of all sizes, overhead hoists, and flatteners helpful. Willingness and ability to be trained to operate is required.

11. Experience using nail gun and banding equipment and tools is helpful.

12. Knowledge of Company’s QA Manual, including the traceability system, inspection procedures, and steel identification marking procedures is helpful.

13. Some basic mechanical skills aptitude regarding construction of boxes and crates and packing of same is helpful.

14. Willing and able to work with exposure to severe weather conditions, smoke, and fumes.
