As per the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the minimum wage for drivers in New Zealand is NZ$25.00 per hour from 1 April 2026 for workers aged 18 and over. Overtime rates apply after 40 hours per week at 1.5 times the hourly rate under the Employment Relations Act. This rate covers all driver roles including truck and delivery positions.

As per Immigration New Zealand, overseas drivers require an Accredited Employer Work Visa valid for up to three years with a job offer from an accredited employer. The visa application fee is NZ$1,040 for those outside New Zealand as of 2026. Drivers must also hold a valid New Zealand driver licence appropriate to the vehicle class.

As per NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, applicants need a Class 4 or Class 5 heavy vehicle licence plus a current Driver Licence Endorsement for the vehicle type. Two years of verifiable driving experience in the past five years is required for most heavy vehicle roles. A medical certificate renewed every five years is mandatory.
