As per the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the adult minimum wage for cleaning staff in New Zealand is NZ$24.50 per hour as of 1 April 2026. Cleaning staff working more than 40 hours per week must receive time-and-a-half for overtime hours. This rate applies to all employees aged 16 and over regardless of contract type.

As per Immigration New Zealand, international applicants for cleaning roles must hold an Accredited Employer Work Visa valid for up to three years with a job offer from an accredited employer. Applicants require a minimum of NZ$29.66 per hour or the relevant minimum wage, whichever is higher, and must provide an employment agreement before visa approval. The visa application fee is NZ$1,040 for those outside New Zealand as of 2026.

As per Employment New Zealand, no formal education qualification is required for cleaning staff positions but applicants must demonstrate at least six months of paid cleaning experience in the past three years. Employers can require a current driver's licence for roles involving travel between sites. New Zealand Qualifications Authority Level 2 or 3 certificates in cleaning are accepted but not mandatory.

As per Employment New Zealand, applicants must submit a completed application form, a current CV showing work history, two references from previous employers, and proof of right to work such as a passport or visa. For roles involving hazardous substances, a current SiteSafe passport or equivalent safety certificate dated within the last two years is required.
