Employers must pay this rate for all hours worked including trial shifts, with underpayment leading to arrears and penalties of up to 200% of arrears. As per the GOV.UK, the Skilled Worker visa permits non-UK citizens to take restaurant roles such as chefs if the job meets the £38,700 salary threshold or the going rate for the occupation code from 1 January 2026. Applicants must hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship issued by a licensed sponsor and pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year.
Q What age and right-to-work requirements apply for starting restaurant employment in the United Kingdom?
As per the GOV.UK, restaurant workers in United Kingdom must be at least 16 years old, with those aged 16-17 entitled to the £7.55 per hour National Minimum Wage rate from April 2026.
