The National Living Wage for drivers aged 21 and over is £12.80 per hour as of 1 April 2026. All hours including loading and waiting time must be paid at this rate with no exceptions for piecework. Employers must also pay £1.26 per hour extra for night work between 11pm and 6am.
Q Which driving licence category and CPC qualification are required to drive 7.5 tonne lorries in the UK in 2026?
Drivers need a Category C1 licence plus Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card issued by DVSA. The initial CPC costs £300 and requires 35 hours of periodic training every five years. Without a valid CPC card drivers cannot legally operate goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Q How many hours can lorry drivers legally work per week under GB domestic rules in 2026?
Drivers are limited to 10 hours driving per day and 48 hours per week on average over a 17-week reference period. They must take 11 consecutive hours of rest in every 24-hour period. Tachograph records must be kept for at least 28 days and shown to DVSA on request.
Q What visa route and salary threshold apply to non-UK lorry drivers applying for work in 2026?
Non-UK drivers must apply under the Skilled Worker visa with a minimum salary of £38,700 or the going rate for HGV drivers whichever is higher. The visa requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed employer and costs £719 for a three-year visa. Drivers from Ireland are exempt under Common Travel Area rules.
