According to Employment and Social Development Canada, the median hourly wage for plumbers in Canada is CAD 36.50 as of January 2026, with entry-level rates starting at CAD 28.75 per hour in most provinces. Overtime applies after 44 hours per week at 1.5 times the regular rate in Ontario and similar rules in other provinces. These figures exclude union premiums which can add CAD 5-8 per hour.
Q What work permit is required for foreign plumbers to work legally in Canada in 2026?
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada requires foreign plumbers to obtain a work permit under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, with a valid Labour Market Impact Assessment from Service Canada dated no older than 6 months. Applicants must also hold a valid Red Seal endorsement or provincial certificate and apply through the IRCC portal before arrival. Processing takes 8-12 weeks as of 2026.
Q What certification is needed to qualify as a plumber in Canada in 2026?
Employment and Social Development Canada states that plumbers must complete a 4-5 year apprenticeship program with 7200 hours of on-the-job training plus 720 hours of technical training, followed by the Red Seal exam. Provincial trade certification from bodies like Skilled Trades Ontario is mandatory before independent work. No experience exemptions apply after 2025 regulatory updates.
Q Which documents are required when applying for plumber jobs through the federal Job Bank in 2026?
Service Canada requires a valid Social Insurance Number, Red Seal certificate or provincial licence, and a completed Job Bank profile with proof of Canadian work experience or apprenticeship records. Foreign applicants must upload their work permit approval and language test results showing CLB level 7 or higher. Applications without these documents are rejected within 5 business days.
